The treatment of knee problems begins with an understanding of the injury and influencing factors. The knee is the most frequently seriously injured body part in sports and, thus, being a trained sports medicine physician provides Dr. Byrd with unique knowledge in this area. Most injuries should respond to conservative treatment but accurate assessment and diagnosis is key in order to implement a properly directed recovery program.
Knee arthroscopy is the most commonly performed of all orthopaedic procedures. Results vary, however, depending on the nature of the problem. Experience and skill may make the difference between a modest and superior outcome. Dr. Byrd trained with Dr. James Andrews, a pioneer of modern arthroscopy. Dr. Byrd has performed thousands of these procedures, written and lectured extensively on these topics, and trained other orthopaedic surgeons in these techniques.
In addition to routine arthroscopy, arthroscopic assisted techniques have greatly improved major knee surgery such as reconstruction for damage to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Dr. Byrd has developed award winning educational programs on this topic which are distributed by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
